Of course you do! That's why we've answered the top questions we get most often. Did we skip something you'd like more clarification on? Reach out to us anytime at info@flowstate-hypnotherapy.com
The process of therapeutic hypnosis is similar to the very relaxed, openminded, gentle feeling you get right before you fall asleep—except you don't fall asleep! You stay IN that blissful, peaceful feeling, which is pretty darn nice. This is also a completely natural state for your brain, but in our hectic daily lives it’s not easily achieved. Accessing this state of deep, focused attention with the strategic guidance of a certified hypnotherapist allows you to bypass your critical conscious mind, enabling the therapeutic restructuring of old thought patterns, behaviors, and emotional responses to things like pain or anxiety. It's freeing, it's gentle, it's safe, and it's like a spa day for your brain—only without all the new-age flute music on loop.
You're not alone. Because of all the freaky-woowoo-mindspell misrepresentations of hypnosis in media over the last 100 years, it's not surprising that many people have some strong reservations about this very effective therapeutic modality. So let's be completely clear: There is absolutely NO "mind control" in hypnotherapy. It is a neuroscience-based practice, and you have complete agency the entire time. Plus, it's also highly imaginative, creative, and freeing. So if you're not getting enough of those vibes in your day-to-day life, this might be just what you need.
Absolutely not. There is NO mind control or magic spells in hypnotherapy like you see in the movies. You will be deeply relaxed, but can emerge from a hypnotic trance anytime, just like you can emerge from the "flow" you get into when you’re gardening, cleaning, cooking, exercising, folding laundry, doing a puzzle, playing music, woodworking, coloring, sewing, writing, crafting, cycling, sketching, swimming, practicing yoga, doing origami, painting rocks, building birdhouses—ok, you probably get the idea. Our point is that YOU are in always control of your brainwaves. Not us.
There are no DeLorean time-machines here! We do not practice any type of regressive hypnotherapy. Our approach is dedicated to helping you look forward, NOT backward. All sessions and conversations will always be future-focused and goal-oriented to connect you to the life you want by accessing your brain's natural ability to form new neural pathways through deep relaxation, and focus. If you are struggling with any unresolved past traumas, we suggest you consult a qualified mental health professional that specializes in evidence-based approaches such as CBT or EMDR. Like Marty McFly, we only want to tell you about the FUTURE.
Just like your waking life, when you are in a hypnotic state you are totally in control of your body, including what it says and does. You are deeply relaxed, but still fully present with the ability to make decisions based on what feels safe and authentic to you. Your safety and comfort is our top priority when it comes to your experience with us, because we know it will yield the best results for you. But, if you really, really want to get your chicken-dance groove on in the privacy of our space, just let us know during your discovery call so we can move the furniture. We don't judge.
Even though it's how this therapeutic treatment is typically presented in live-entertainment stage shows and movies, sleep is NOT the goal. What you will experience is your "theta-dominant brain state" which is the deep relaxation trance that happens BEFORE you fall asleep, where your subconscious is still active and responsive. If you were to enter a deep, delta-wave sleep state, your receptivity to this treatment would actually diminish. But no need to worry—we are clinically trained to keep that from happening, because we know success comes from aligning the deeper, quieter parts of your mind with your goals and desires. No sleep-mask required.
Sometimes people don’t think hypnotherapy is working at first because they can’t “feel” anything significantly different during their experience, or they are fully aware of what’s happening. This is normal, and it doesn't mean your brain isn't actively rewiring itself. The changes happening in your brain are subtle and cumulative. No two human brains are alike, but most people begin to notice results after the first few sessions. Clients also report feeling very refreshed after their sessions, as opposed to feeling tired or emotionally drained. The great thing about neuroplasticity is that it works hard when you're hardly working!
Nope. Hypnotherapy is not a replacement for therapy. It’s a complimentary modality, similar to how you might work with a personal trainer and a nutritionist at the same time to get better results and move more quickly toward your goals. Regular therapy will help you process painful memories, deal with past traumas, navigate difficult issues, resolve relationship conflicts, and build emotional resilience so you understand yourself better. Hypnotherapy will help you take that self-knowledge and use it to build your desired future existence by rewriting your neural pathways so the stories you tell yourself will support your goals, instead of holding you back from them. Plus, having a dedicated team of people who are supporting you with your mental health is the most empowering thing you can possibly do for yourself. And we applaud you for that.
Similar to therapy or physical therapy, a single visit is not going to give you immediate results. This would be like going to the gym and getting a great workout in—but then never going back and expecting a complete transformation. Regular sessions will also provide a structured framework for tracking your progress and adjusting your goals while giving you the opportunity to celebrate your successes. We focus on building partnerships rooted in trust, support, and mutual understanding, making this therapeutic process feel more natural and integrated into your life. Additionally, research studies have shown that the progress made in 6 hypnotherapy sessions is the equivalent of 22 sessions of regular therapy. So your results can certainly be rapid, just not instantaneous.
Your mind is a muscle! And much like physical therapy or massage therapy, the success of your hypnotherapy is also based on repetition. The more you allow your brain to focus on who you’re becoming without the resistance you normally feel, the faster you will become it. The exact number of sessions will vary based on individual need, but most people find that setting up a weekly-session cadence (e.g. same day and time) gives them the best results. Your brain craves patterns and predictability! And knowing that you have a dedicated time and space each week to work on your personal transformation can be incredibly empowering. This also helps shift your brain into it's more confident, look-at-me-go future state.
Please plan to spend a full hour in our delightful, relaxing space. Since we practice Neuroaesthetic Hypnotherapy, our sessions have fun activities—and you definitely don't want to skip those! The deeper focused hypnosis portion generally lasts between 20-30 minutes, leaving time for us to have a 10 minute debrief at the end. This will allow us to discuss your progress and make any adjustments for your future experiences, to ensure that your sessions are always as effective as possible. Our goal is to make sure you feel safe, comfortable, and supported.
This is a common concern for many people! There is a small percentage of our population who cannot maintain the disassociation between action and reflection, which is the basis of a hypnotic trance. BUT we can tell you that if you've ever become so absorbed in something that you're not worrying about anything else and time seems to pass without you noticing it, it's highly likely that hypnotherapy can be very effective for you. On the flip side, if you have a deep skepticism, with an "I-bet-they-can't hypnotize-me!" resistance, you will have difficulty, and this therapy probably isn't for you. Additionally, if you had a poor rapport with another hypnotherapist that created a negative experience, but would like to move past that and see if Neuroaesthetic Hypnotherapy is a better fit for you, we would love to speak with you about our process and see if that feels right for your personal transformation goals.
While there are no known incidents of people having been "hurt" by hypnotherapy itself, there are times when deliberately induced hypnosis should be avoided. If you have any of the following conditions, we DO NOT recommend hypnotherapy treatments:
Mental Health Conditions: Psychotic disorders, mania, schizophrenia, severe depression, borderline personality disorder, dissociation.
Physical Health Conditions: Epilepsy, severe heart conditions, dementia, acute asthma, traumatic brain injury (TBI), seizures, pregnancy (first-trimester), extreme drug or alcohol addiction issues.
Please also note that it is unsafe for us to treat people who are under the influence of any drugs or alcohol, so please abstain from this prior to your session. Our primary goal is to ensure this experience completely safe and effective for you.
